America Ferrera

Do you remember circa 1994 when Elizabeth Hurley and then beau Hugh Grant made a sexy splash on the red carpet wearing a black Versace gown held together by safety pins? (If you missed this moment because you were in, say, elementary school, just click “read more,” below, we’ve got the picture here). Liz wasn’t shy about showing skin and it worked, going down in history as one of the hottest dresses of the whole glunge—that’s glamour and grunge, girls—era. Recently, America Ferrera sported this Moschino safety pin dress and it gives off an entirely different, ladylike vibe, don’t you think?

Designers have been bringing the safety pin trend back in a hardcore way and the trendoids here in New York City are buying it hook, line and sinker. Case in point: In the line for the dressing room at Forever21 last week I saw not one but two girls in safety pin leggings. But I love how America’s dress is just a classic LBD you could honestly wear home for the holidays with grandma. The safety pins add a bit of edge but nothing too much for your average family get together. It’s not, you know, this kind of dress:
