America Ferrera

Do you remember circa 1994 when Elizabeth Hurley and then beau Hugh Grant made a sexy splash on the red carpet wearing a black Versace gown held together by safety pins? (If you missed this moment because you were in, say, elementary school, just click “read more,” below, we’ve got the picture here). Liz wasn’t shy about showing skin and it worked, going down in history as one of the hottest dresses of the whole glunge—that’s glamour and grunge, girls—era. Recently, America Ferrera sported this Moschino safety pin dress and it gives off an entirely different, ladylike vibe, don’t you think?

Designers have been bringing the safety pin trend back in a hardcore way and the trendoids here in New York City are buying it hook, line and sinker. Case in point: In the line for the dressing room at Forever21 last week I saw not one but two girls in safety pin leggings. But I love how America’s dress is just a classic LBD you could honestly wear home for the holidays with grandma. The safety pins add a bit of edge but nothing too much for your average family get together. It’s not, you know, this kind of dress:

Lead the Pack…Watercolor Trend

At Luca Luca, the colors were a little richer, but the idea was just as worthy of Winslow Homer. And here’s a great styling trick to steal from the runway–pair your attention-getting watercolor print with a blank canvas, like white jeans.

At Cynthia Rowley, the prints were hand-dipped in watercolor, to make the models look like “a girl who ran away from home and got wet in the rain and the print of her dress is running.” Mission accomplished!

This dress from Ports 1961 looks like it finished drying mere minutes before hitting the runway, doesn’t it? If you’re not someone who loves to wear splashy colors, try a subtler take on this trend with a watercolor print in a range of neutral shades.

What do you girls think of this trend? Will you try out watercolor prints? Do you already have anything similar? Does this scream “DIY project” to you? Which watercolor look do you like best? Discuss!

Trend Alert: Bunny Ear Headbands
“Remember when Madonna wore them? Are you next? As with all questions of style, my policy is never say never. So when I saw an adorable pic on the Sartorialist of a real girl headed to the Vuitton show in Paris wearing, yep, LV bunny ears, I knew I had to get my hands on a pair. Dear readers, what do you think?” (written courtesy glamour.com)

From the Editor-

I personally do not dig this style at all. It seems very costumey and I don’t believe a true fashionista would ever rock this outside a haute couture fashion gala or Halloween. Trust me when I say I love headbands; I myself have ones that include gemstones, feathers, flowers etc. but this is a bit to theatrical for even me. It’s very Alice in Wonderland. And let’s be reminded folks Madonna isn’t like the rest of us I mean she immortalized the pointed bra but that doesn’t mean it was ever appropriate on the social scene.
